*rubs hands together with glee*

That's right, folks. It's that time of year again. 40 days and counting until you're required to send your still-beating heart this year's tax return to the Internal Revenue Service. And it's also the time of year when Celli's Annual Taxfic Challenge returns. Spread the word!

The rules:

1) Taxes must be involved. Any kind of taxes. Individual, corporate, estate, gift, federal, state, sales, excise, property...anything you can think of to tie to the concept of taxation.
2) Required vocabulary: either the word accrual or the word withholding. Bonus points for both.
3) Any fandom, any classification, any pairing or lack thereof is welcome.
4) Aim for 500+ words, although I won't be wordcounting. Extra super super special bonus points, and possibly a cookie, for a fic that's precisely 1040 words long.

Can't find a premise, or need some loophole in the tax code explained to you? I'm here for the asking. Five years of tax experience should be good for something, and I can't think of a better something than promoting fic. *g*

Once you've posted it, email me or comment in a post with the link, and I'll do a big index post the morning (hahahahaha) the evening of April 16.

And for your reading pleasure:
The 2003 Taxfic Challenge
The 2004 Taxfic Challenge

P.S. If you're working on a Remix fic, for Pete's sake, finish that first! Or [info]musesfool will come after me with the poky stick.
P.P.S. ...if anyone catches me working on this instead of a Remix fic, dopeslap me.

I'm ... unforgivably, inexplicably happy that you're doing this again. This weekend I was thinking about what I'd write if you did, and while I came up stunningly empty handed, I still was hoping that I'd have the chance. The chance ... to fail, I guess?

But yay! I'm excited! As you can undoubtedly tell!

*beam* Yay! I wasn't going to do it, but I've spent the last week reading about things that would make perfect stories, so I knew it was A Sign.

And let me know if you can't think of anything! I would be delighted to help you brainstorm. :)

And then... Damn it. I don't know what happened, but NCIS banter happened. :P Darn you and your evil accounting fic challenges! Going to go post it right now.

I love doing my taxes.

I love getting my refund.

I love that [info]tzikeh and I were SO right about Jed Bartlet being the kind of (Pulitzer Prize winning nerd) who loves doing HIS own taxes and who wanted to continue to do so as president but was thwarted in that plan.

Hm, after thinking about my (complete lack of) progress on the Remix fic, do you think my still-beating heart would be an acceptable submission for Taxfic this year?

I could send it express post and everything.

Not like I'm going to have time to write this, but what tax stuff do small businesses have to worry about? I presume someone who owns a business files their personal taxes, plus all the stuff for the shop, but aside from that I'm clueless. We're talking smallish floral shop, maybe one or two additional helpers.
[info]celli wrote:
Mar. 8th, 2005 05:10 pm (UTC)
If it's small enough, you're right, it'll be filed as a Schedule C along with the owner's personal tax return. Once it gets a bit larger, they might choose to have it file its own return as a partnership or a small corporation.

The shop will also be responsible for state and local sales taxes on the flowers it sells (paid in once a month, usually, to the tte department of revenue). With employees, you have *their* taxes and Social Security/Medicare. The shop would withhold the employees' portion of it and set aside their own liability (they pay half the SS/Medicare due) and then remit that to the feds. For a small business, they probably pay those taxes in on a monthly basis, but it varies.
